One-Day Personal Jam

Poly Art & HandPainted RabbitFriday while I was at work my kid wrote me a scary story book and left it on my desk in the office. He's super in CreepyPasta and Five Nights at Freddie's, and jump scare YouTube videos, but he's young, and it's new that he's even able to write his own stories let alone craft narratives.

I was super proud of what he'd written and illustrated, and happy that he'd made it as a surprise for me. So while he was at his biological dad's house for the weekend I decided to make his book interactive... partially as an exercise, but mostly to return the favor of the gift and make him happy.

Having done it (almost) all in a day, there's not much DevLog to log, but I wanted to share a few things that really helped me speed up the project.

I'm not a bad artist, but I'm definitely out of practice, so I leveraged the Unity Asset Store heavily for graphics. Most of the models, textures, and character animations in the game are from two assets:

Spooky Forest Environment: https://www.assetstore.unity3d.com/en/#!/content/69280

Poly Art & HandPainted Rabbit: https://www.assetstore.unity3d.com/en/#!/content/98416

For most of the sprites, I used quick reference photos or royalty-free clipart. I got a consistent look by running it all through an iOS app called Prisma that has many very good paint effects. The hand cursor was just a phone pic of my hand run through Prisma; no other work. It's a great way to quickly mock some style.

Anyway, just wanted to share a little background... and also test out itch.io. This is my first project I've shared on here, but I'd like to do more.

Thanks for reading.
